Activity 5: Tone

Part A: In the above image, how is tone used to help create emphasis and direct the viewer’s eye?
  • What mood is conveyed?
  • What kind of contrast is used (low, higher, highest?)
Part B: Draw a row of 7 boxes. At one end, make the box as dark as possible. At the other end, leave the box empty. Fill in the rest of the boxes so that they gradually go from dark to light. You can do this with a pencil, pen, marker, paintbrush or anything else!
Part C: On the sheet of paper you drew your movement lines, try adding shading to show different values of light and dark. Try to create emphasis and help direct your viewer’s eye to the most important element of your scene.

    Part A:
It shows that the spotlight is sort of on the person and that he is the highest. I think it sets the tone of how the rat maybe has an idea and that the light in the back is kind of representing that.

Part A: In the above image, how is tone used to help create emphasis and direct the viewer’s eye?
    What mood is conveyed?
Mysterious and wonder (a strange encounter between a naive human and a curious mouse)
What kind of contrast is used (low, higher, highest?)
It's highest. First, the light is used to direct us to Remi and Linguinni, here the characters are the key, while the background is darker. This creates a high contrast to their first encounter, creating feeling of excitement, wonder, doubts in a mysterious atmosphere.

Part A: In the above image, how is tone used to help create emphasis and direct the viewer’s eye?
    What mood is conveyed?
The mood that is conveyed is mysterious because it is darker.
What kind of contrast is used (low, higher, highest?)
The kind of contrast that's used is higher because the only light that there is, is faced to the heads of the mouse and the guy to draw our attention to them

The mood conveyed would probably be excitement or wonder. The contrast for this scene shows mostly at the top, slowly getting darker as your eyes go down to the bottom of the image.

    Part A:

In the above image, tone is used to create emphasis and direct the viewer's eye by making the rat and the man in the chef hat the brightest elements in the scene. The light from the street lamp illuminates them, drawing attention to their interaction.
The mood conveyed in this scene appears to be suspenseful or mysterious, given the dark corner setting and the rat pointing its finger at the man.
A contrast of higher intensity is used in this scene, with the bright figures of the rat and the man standing out against the darker background, enhancing the drama and focus on their interaction.
    Part B:

I will draw a row of 7 boxes, starting with the first box being nearly white and gradually shading each subsequent box to become darker, ending with the last box being nearly black.
    Part C:

On the sheet of paper where I drew my movement lines, I will add shading to show different values of light and dark. I will use lighter shading to highlight the most important element of the scene, such as the characters or key objects, and darker shading to create depth and contrast. This will help emphasize and direct the viewer's eye to the focal points of the scene, enhancing its visual impact and storytelling.
