Lesson 1: Building knowledgeWelcome to the Athletes in Action unit!
Wilma Rudolph, the first woman to win 3 gold medals in a single Olympics, taking the lead.
Athletes have to work incredibly hard for years and years, pushing their bodies to the limits to achieve their goals. Both female athletes and athletes of color must also overcome the prejudice and barriers that people put in their way—both within their sports, and in society in general. In this unit, you’ll learn about some of the people who’ve broken through those barriers. People who’ve achieved sporting glory for themselves or have helped others do so, and who’ve paved the way for future generations to follow in their footsteps.
In this unit, you will:
- Learn about the impact of an important law passed in the USA that enabled more women to take part in sports.
- Find out about the first woman to complete the Boston marathon—and the men who tried to stop her
- Read about the life and achievements of legendary boxer Muhammad Ali, and read a poem about a basketball coach who’s inspired by him
